Tom Boven enlisted in his hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan in August 1943. His rate was Petty Officer Third Class and his rating was Shipfitter. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for injuries he sustained on 12 April 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa. He was wounded by shrapnel from a Japanese kamikaze attack. After being discharged from the Navy in Washington, Tom returned to his young wife, Katie, in Kalamazoo and settled down. He worked for many years at the Fisher Body Plant there making parts for General Motors cars. Tom died in September 2010.
