John V Branscome

John Branscome served as a Sonarman Third Class while aboard the USS Bennion. After boot camp and upon completion of Operators and Maintenance School, he was transferred to Norfolk Naval Base where he joined the Bennion as a sonarman. He stayed their until after the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. He was then sent to Pearl Harbor to gain more training, but was never able to catch up with the Bennion again. He was discharged as a Sonarman First Class in January of 1946.

After the war, John attended Virginia Polytechnical Institute using the benefits of the GI Bill. He then worked as an electrical engineer for E.I. DuPont in Deepwater, New Jersey for 40 years. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Woodstown, New Jersey, where he taught Sunday school. He also taught electrical courses at the local community college and loved fruit and vegetable gardening. John regularly attended the USS Bennion shipmate reunions. When he died in 2010, he was survived by his wife of 64 years, Myra, and his two sons and two daughters.
